Urge TN Reps to Vote Down Initiative to Ban All Mention of Homosexuality in Schools

The K-12 sub-committee in the Tennessee General Assembly is going to decide this Wednesday 3/11 whether to advance bill HB0821 which would ban all mention of homosexuality in schools. Many schools implement diversity training at age appropriate levels to teach kids respect for same-sex headed families, and educate about tolerance towards LGBT people.

I've gotten this e-mail a few times, and it always makes me wonder who decided to sit down and write out as many wives-tales as they could. Here's part of the e-mail that makes me want to respond to it.

"Dawn dish detergent kills fleas instantly. Dawn Dishwashing Liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas."

My first thought when I read this was "yeah, i'm sure it does, but water kills fleas too." Seriously though, it's a good dish wash because it breaks up grease, but grease is oil and oil is what makes healthy hair and in this case fur. Drying out your dog's coat that badly is going to cause a lot more problems.

It's always funny to see dances you do in SCA on period pieces.

Our shire, the shire of Crimson River is having a war college on May 24th. This is a one day event with all the fun things involved in SCA in a new comer friendly environment. So, if you have always wanted to check out the SCA but were a little overwhelmed, this is a good first event.

We're going to have lots of fun classes, fighting and cook out style food for a super low price. Come check it out!

Japanese steak house

So, we went to the Japanese steak house tonight. It was pretty fun as usual We go once or twice a semester. Tonight was funny because the guy was obviously new. He kept dropping things. At one point he spilled a bowl of rice all over mook's plate. It was hilarious. Mook couldn't stop laughing the whole time.

New Tea Set 茶セット

I got a new tea set tonight. It is Japanese style and is a soft gray with floral designs and a metal handle. It even came with a nice little stand to set them all on. I had been looking at the import stores for a while to find a set I liked. They just got this one in today according to the sales girl. I'm enjoying sitting here sipping my tea. : )

The tea set on its stand. It came with 4 cups. I love the shape of the cups.

This is the box it came in. I had to take a picture because the box was so cute. As you can see, it has kanji and Japanese stamps on it. The neat thing about Japanese stamps is they generally mean a family name. I wonder what these mean. The name of the tea set is Tomoko, so maybe that is what they say.

So, knitting is my obsession. I knit pretty much daily if at all possible. I don't know why I like it so much, but I do. It is really my best stress management technique right now, but like everything I like, it gets out of hand. It has kind of taken over more space than I would like, but just looking at my yarn tends to improve my mood. Because of this, it lives in my living room.

This is the "tower" of knitting. It is really half of the shelves attached to my massive entertainment center. It is pretty packed. The other side has the tv components, xbox 360, wii, and my stereo.

Here are the pieces of the "tower" in order, from top to bottom.

This is the top shelf, it is filled with my own hand made needles and drop spindles, vintage needles (given to me by my grandmother and mother in law) and store bought needles. I had a lot of fun making the needles I cut, sanded, polished, stained and tipped them with beads. I think they turned out really well. I haven't gotten any swank close up pictures of them. This is the best one I have atm, and it is crummy.

The second shelf consists of knitting books (which is the vast majority), crochet books, cross stitch books, patterns etc. It also has my SCA project basket, which is full of cotton yarn and stick weaving needles. It also has the clock I painted. I made two of these, one for me and one for my mother for xmas a few years back.

The next shelf is the biggest one. It holds a good deal of my yarn. It is three 2 skeins and the balls on front deep. It's full of mostly chunky and sport weight yarn, but has some really nice sock yarns on front. I especially am in love with the bamboo wool mix. It is soft and light while being warm.

These are the last two shelves. The first shelf is packed two layers thick. It has a lot of baby weight stuff on the back and some moderately thick cashmere yarn on the front. I love, love, love the soft cashmere yarn. I found it on sale at JoAnn's in Madison for $8 a ball which is cheap as heck for cashmere. I can't wait to think of the right project for it.

The next shelf (which is hidden behind the willow basket) is my unloved yarn storage. This is where all of the yarn other people deem fit to donate to me, but I don't really like goes. I save it all because other crafts use yarn, and being on my way to being an Art teacher says to me "you will use this somewhere later".

In front of that is my everyday project basket/purse thing and a willow basket with more yarn in it. I have some sock yarn and some chunky yarn to make some SCA stockings out of. I have no idea how that will work yet, but I have master, wicked plans and a book on vintage sock knitting.

But it doesn't stop there...

I also have my current projects folding bamboo basket. It's a really nice basket that I intended to be for my current home projects, but so far my current projects live in the purse that I take places. I seem to knit on the go more than at home. I guess that is the fault of wifi.

It is currently full of baby yarn, and ziplock bags full of finished baby clothes. Here is a much better picture of it from a catalog. Lantern moon is the best. Here is a picture of one of the finished pieces stored in there.

and there is my abandoned projects box. This is a box full of things that either didn't work, I didn't like or I couldn't find enough yarn to finish and are waiting me to decide what to do with them.

You can see it is a big box...

and there is the baby basket. This used to be the most used basket when I was learning how to knit, but most of the stuff in it is just ugly and I need to figure out something else to do with it.

everything is kind of pink right now....

I'm having a blast listening to Gypsy music at Cafe Coco atm. It is a live band with a bass, guitar, violin, and some sort of another stringed instrument that I cannot identify from this angle. Sorry for the crappy pictures, it is dark and it is off of my iSight.

Here they are, during this picture they are playing a song called "Salt Peanuts".

So, the band says "the name of the song is salt peanuts. Go ahead, say it with us." half the bar says it after that, then part of the way through the song as they sing it, a chick says "why are they saying salt peanuts?"

If you want to get the joke sing "salt peanuts" and it should sound like something perverse. ;)

SCA: New Garb

So, I decided to make a new SCA dress recently. I looked forever, trying to find a gold brocade to make it out of. I found lots of pretty brocade, but everywhere I went had very little of it. I needed 5-6 yards, and the most I could find was 3. After walking around Hancocks for a couple of hours I finally settled on some copper/gold colored chinchilla, which is a very low pile velvet like fabric. I picked it mostly for the color and that it was a substantial enough looking material that still had a flowy drape to it.

So, I took out a pattern cut out my paper pieces, used them to make a similar bodice, eyed the skirt pieces and tossed them. I wish I hadn't bothered to even buy the pattern, I got more out of looking at the picture than it. I finished eyeballing and cutting my fabric, got out my antique machine and tried to use it. I think I spent around 15 minutes sewing off and on as compared to 2 hours fixing the darn thing. It's from the late 20's and it really is a pain to use. Ironically, out of the three machines I owned, it was the best one. I finally got so fed up I quit for the night. The next day I tried to use it again, and again it drove me up a wall. I finally just got up, went to the store and bought a new one. This is my very first modern sewing machine. It has a computer on it, it threads itself, and it has 60 stitches built into it. It is a heck of a big change from the one I had. It is a brother machine. I generally have only had singer machines, but I could only find 3 singers for sale, which is sad since we have a singer store, that sells no singers. Anyway, so far this new machine is pretty nice. I used it to finish up the dress, and here are the pictures.

The color in the picture is not quite right, it is a copperish gold color.

The dress is quite a bit too long as you can see by where the under dress ends. The under dress is ankle length on me. I left it long out of a mix of apathy for cutting and hemming the dress, as it lands on the selvege at the moment and wouldn't need hemming, and me wanting a longer, more billowy look.

A close up of the trim. The color is a bit off, it is a pale purple with antique gold. It compliments the color of the dress really well. I am really glad I got it, I was thinking about skipping it, but the trim really gives it a more finished look.

Here is a close up of one of the 60 stitches the new machine does. The graphic makes it look like an asterisk, but it came out looking more like a flower chain.

Why must people steal the icons I make without bothering to get off their fat duff and ask or even bother to freaking credit it? How rude of a jerk do you have to be to go to a journal that clearly says "Don't STEAL my icons" take the icon and then post it for other people to use as if it is your own to do whatever you wish with?

I found someone using this icon early today who I found out got it from this sort of situation of someone posting it somewhere as free to take. She didn't do anything wrong, but whoever posted it to take did. She wasn't sure where that was. She gave me a similar community, but since it has so many people, it's a bit hard for me to do anything past search it. I did that with no results.

It mainly makes me mad because I have a community for icons I made for other people, and yet they are still rude enough to steal them. I know it is a simple icon, with a simple image, but if it is so damn simple make the damn icon yourself and stop stealing other peoples things. Using the internet is not free rights to take whatever you like.

Case in point, at least these people were nice enough to make her own images.

I'm going back months in time looking for the posts with the icon on these communities.
Argh.

The only thing worse than this is when I used a hand drawn piece of art as an icon and some asshole posted it on one of those myspace icon pages.

P.S. If any of you have seen this icon used anywhere, please let me know.
